Both wired smoke detectors and battery-powered smoke detectors require batteries. Wired alarms have backup batteries that may need to be replaced. Since battery-powered smoke detectors simply cannot work without batteries, you may need to replace the batteries periodically.
You can replace smoke alarm batteries by following these simple steps.
1. Remove the smoke detector from ceilling
Remove the smoke detector and check manual. If you are replacing the battery in a wired smoke detector, you should first turn off the power to the circuit breaker.
On some models, you can simply twist the base and the alarm apart. On some models, you may need to use a screwdriver to remove the base. If you are unsure, check the manual.
2. Remove the old battery from the detector
Press the test button 3-5times to make the alarm release the residual power, so as to avoid low battery fault alarm. Before you replace the battery, you will need to remove the old battery. Note whether you are replacing a 9V or AA, as different models use different batteries. If you are using a 9v or AA battery, remember where the negative and positive terminals connect.
3. Insert New Batteries
When replacing the batteries in a smoke detector, always use new alkaline batteries and make sure you are replacing them with the correct type, either AA or 9v. If you are unsure, check the manual.
4. Reinstall the Base and Test the Detector
Once the new batteries are properly installed, put the cover back on the smoke alarm and reinstall the base that connects the detector to the wall. If you are using a wired system, turn the power back on.
You can test the smoke detector to make sure the batteries are working properly. Most smoke detectors have a test button - press it for a few seconds and it will make a sound if it is working properly. If the smoke detector fails the test, check that you are using the correct batteries or try new batteries.
